Tadashi Torii

Born in Osaka, Japan, Tadashi came to the United States in 1987. In 1989 he attended Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia. While studying business, he found his true calling in the Art Department at the glassblowing studio. In 1997, Tadashi graduated with his BFA in glassblowing / sculpture.

Tadashi moved to Knoxville, Tennessee to work with glass artist Richard Jolley. After moving back to Georgia in 2001, Tadashi worked with many creative people to turn ideas into reality. In 2005, he opened Duckbill Studios and is working on a unique collection of art and functional glass pieces inspired in part by his heritage and by social concurrent. He hopes to encourage a love of art in those who view his work.

Artist Statement

I chose glass as my medium because of its complex nature. I feel that it adds an extra element to my art. Glass is mysterious. It is both liquid and solid. The images I try to convey are natural and rigid, joyful and sorrowful, free and at the same time captured in time.

Working with glass is a study in contrasts. Patience mixed with anxiety, skill combined with coincidence, confusion with clarity. These are the ideas I try to incorporate into my vision. Glass affords me the opportunity to see the inner thoughts of my mind come to life. It is exciting to take the known nature of the material and use my skills to expand and challenge the medium and myself.
