Hans Godo Frabel Award and the Frabel Novice Award

The Frabel Awards is the only independent glass art competition open (and free) to emerging glass artists as well as established glass artists. What makes the Frabel Awards so unique is that that your peers vote the winner, not some Jury, making these awards the highest compliment a glass artist could receive.

The Frabel Awards 2008 offers, besides the honor of being chosen as the best artist by your fellow artists, an award designed by Hans Godo Frabel and $3,000 in cash prizes. Finalists are also recognized on the MyGlassArt.org website and their online galleries will receive special front page attention.

Accepted works, which may be any form of glass art, with the exception of beads and pipes, are considered for nomination based on:

  • Originality of design and creativity
  • Degree of difficulty
  • Innovative use of materials
  • Mastery of the techniques utilized
  • Aesthetics
  • Overall technical quality of the piece

To find the best glass artists the Frabel Art Foundation will have two categories for this competition:

Hans Godo Frabel Award

The Hans Godo Frabel Award, designed by Hans Godo Frabel, and a $2,000 cash prize will be presented to the Glass Artist that obtains the most votes from his or her peers on the MyGlassArt.org website. This competition is open to all Glass Artists worldwide (excluding beads and pipes artists)

Frabel Novice Award

The Frabel Novice Award, designed by Hans Godo Frabel, and a $1,000 cash prize will be presented to the emerging Glass Artist that obtains the most votes from his or her peers on the MyGlassArt.org website. This competition is open to all Novice Glass Artists worldwide, excluding beads and pipes artists. Novice Glass Artists are defined as students, early-career artists, and others who are rising through the ranks of glass art but who are not yet represented at the top-flight international galleries.

NOMINATION COMMITTEE

Hans Godo Frabel

Hans Godo Frabel was born in Jena, East Germany in 1941. In 1965 he came to the United States and settled in Atlanta. Hans Godo Frabel is one of the world’s first modern flameworking glass artists. Most galleries at this time felt that glass was not an art medium. Determined to change the view of the art world, he saved up enough money to open his own gallery in 1968. In 1971, the first museum, the Birmingham Museum of Art, acquired one of his works for their permanent collection. In the 1970’s Frabel’s art received much attention in the United States, and in 1979 he had his international breakthrough as a glass artist. His pop art sculpture “Hammer and Nails” was utilized as the feature piece of the New Glass Art Exhibition, organized by the Corning Museum of Glass. Frabel’s art can presently be found in museums around the world, such as the Smithsonian Institution and the Valencia Museum of Art.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How many of my works of art may I enter to the Frabel Awards?
  • You may enter as many as 3 of your works of art in the Frabel Awards.

  • Where can I find information on the Frabel Awards 2008?
  • Most of your questions about the Frabel Awards will be answered on the MyGlassArt.org website: link Click on the awards button on the homepage.

  • The online entry form is not working. What should I do?
  • If you experience any problems entering the Frabel Awards, please contact us at frabelawards@myglassart.org

  • Is this an international competition?
  • Yes, this is an international competition and we encourage glass artists from all over the world to participate. You can review all the rules and conditions at link

  • Can I enter a mixed media work?
  • Yes, you can, however, the main focus of the work has to be on the glass component.

  • If I enter a mixed media sculpture, how much of the work has to be glass?
  • If the focus of the piece is on the glass component, your work will qualify. As a rule of thumb, if more than half of your work is glass (by volume or weight) then your piece automatically qualifies. However, if the glass component is less than half, or if the glass component is not the main focus of the work, the work may not be accepted. The final decision if your work qualifies will be with the nomination committee.

  • My mixed media piece consists of metal and glass. The base where the metal sculptures sits in is created of glass. Does my work qualify?
  • Probably not. In this case, it sounds like the glass component is merely a stand to support your metal sculpture. However, you may submit this work, if you believe that the focus of the work is on the glass component. If the nomination committee disagrees, just the entry that failed the material qualifications will not be accepted. Any other entrees you submitted will still be considered

  • My work is positioned on a wooden base, but the wood only functions as a stand and is not a material part of the sculpture. Does my work qualify?
  • If the stand is not a material part of the art expression, but merely a way to display your glass sculpture, the nomination committee will accept this and your work will meet the material qualifications. However, acceptances of a sculpture where the material qualifications are debatable are solely up to the Nomination Committee.

  • Do I qualify for the Frabel Novice award or the Hans Godo Frabel Award?
  • The Frabel Novice Award is open to all emerging glass artists worldwide. If you are in the early stages of your career or an experienced artist that is still emerging as a glass artist within the community, this award is probably for you. The Hans Godo Frabel award is for all glass artists including ones with prior recognition within the glass art community. The competition in this category tends to be more intense because it is a division open to all glass artists.

  • Can I win both Frabel Awards?
  • Yes, it is (theoretically) possible to win both the Frabel Novice Award as well as the Hans Godo Frabel Award.

  • What are my chances to win this competition?
  • Your chances to win depend mostly on the quality and originality of the works of art that you enter. Naturally, the chance to be nominated also depends on the number of entries. Since the competition is open to any glass artist worldwide, and the entry is free, we do expect a substantial number of entries. The nomination committee will select a maximum of 5 nominees in each category.

  • What are the criteria for nomination used by the Frabel Award Nomination Committee to select the nominees?
  • The criteria our Nomination Committee will use to evaluate work are:
Originality of design and creativity; Degree of difficulty; Innovative use of materials; Mastery of the techniques utilized; Aesthetics, and Overall technical quality of the piece
These criteria are not in any particular order and the Nomination Committee may decide to weigh these criteria as they feel them to be important.

ARRANGE FOR SALES, IF DESIRED

If you are nominated, you will be contacted and asked if you would like to offer your nominated work for sale on this website and/ or at the Frabel Studio & Galleries. Please note that even when you decide not to offer your works of art for sale, that they need to be available, upon request of the nomination committee, until after the competition.
