The Toledo Blade Series is inspired by and pursues the artist’s interest in the duality of existence, the manner in which one event, circumstance or artefact can be perceived differently by various participants or indeed by an individual on various occasions. The form of a blade is utilised as a metaphor for the discordant roles an artefact can hold. The axe was the honoured invention that allowed the forests to be cleared for farming but may now be seen as the instrument of environmental disaster. Toledo, Spain is long admired as a centre for fine steel blades yet theses artefacts may be the means of oppression, suffering and genocide. Toledo Ohio, US is the site of an investigative newspaper, [The Toledo Blade] that has exposed corruption by those formerly adulated. Contemplating the intricacies of the tarnishing of that which was bright is the continuing inspiration of this series.
